How Will Your Meeting Become a Special Event?

Years ago when I was training for some exceptionally difficult juggling tricks for my show I would spend many hours a day practicing. One day a neighborhood boy, no more than six, hopped off his bicycle to sit on the opposite curb from my house and watch me practice in the front yard. I was there for three hours. So was the boy. When I finally finished and began packing up my gear, this little sandy-haired kid carefully crossed the street, walked up to me and wordlessly reached into his pocket. From it he produced one shiny nickle, which he handed to me with a big smile and skipped away.

This was one of the most "special events" in the history of my 30-year career as an entertainer. A truly special event is always about people - how we inspire each other, appreciate each other, encourage each other and grow in our personal and professional lives.

It seems that part of the meeting trend these days is to throw ever more advanced technology at attendees, hoping that an overwhelm of the senses will somehow keep their attention and make up for the real thing that every human being is always wanting - human connection.

If we can remember what a "special event" really is and commit ourselves to engaging audiences with humor, authenticity and an appreciation for their attention, the "thank you" we get in response won't be just a polite formality. That thank you will be the foundation of the kind of relationships we all want with our friends, co-workers and clients, relationships that will be good for our spirit as well as good for our business.
