The Power of Humor and Relaxation

I was performing for a corporate event in Naples, Florida recently at The Ritz Carlton Hotel for a classy black tie awards banquet. I had finished the waiter routine and had just begun the stage show when it became apparent that a woman was talking away loudly on her cell phone at one of the front tables.

I stopped and gave her a long, disbelieving look - to no effect. I walked off the stage into the audience, took the phone, and held it up to the mic while politely telling the person on the other end that their chatting partner was actually sitting in the middle of a live theater performance. I then suggested the call could be resumed at a later time.

The man who happened to be on the line told me and the listening crowd that he understood completely. He was in fact the woman's son, a successful stand-up comedian in NY who had been urging his mother to hang-up immediately or surely be singled out and embarrassed for her behavior. Needless to say, this moment made the entire show.

It's taken me a long time to learn to relax when things aren't going exactly the way I would wish for an event. The result of being open to mistakes, accidents or the outright unconsciousness of human beings, including myself, is often what makes an entire function worthwhile.
