Relationships Are EverywhereI was in Salt Lake City a while back for a conference and got picked up to go to the airport by the limo that had been arranged for me. The limo driver was very formal, suit and tie, very polite, good day Mr. Lewis, would you like a paper? Etc. A limo ride to the airport is a scripted dynamic. In this little drama the limo driver is no one and the passenger gets to feel like someone. I’m very familiar with this script because it’s very similar to what occurs between waiters and diners. It’s tempting when you’re being treated like the V.I.P. to indulge this set-up and snap your fingers for service. For a moment I considered riding quietly in the backseat, lounging on the leather, while pretending to be somebody. Such are the moments of choice for us. In recognizing such a moment, I made a different decision on this occasion. Just for fun I leaned forward and I asked the driver, “What would your dream job be if you could do anything that you wanted for work?” The man was a little startled and taken aback for a moment, and then he lit up and started to tell me about the business he was starting to provide guided Harley tours in Southern Utah. He spent the whole 40 min trip to the airport describing in detail the natural wonders of Bryce Canyon, highway 12 and Staircase National Park. I’d been planning a trip there with my kids and he turned out to be a wealth of knowledge on the subject. I asked him questions and he provided valuable information. By the time I got out of that limo I couldn't wait for our trip. I was inspired by the man’s passion and excited to have met the real person behind the limo driver. Relationships are everywhere and the shortest distance between two people is shared enthusiam and passion.
