If You Love Something ...
Put It Back Where You Got It.
The finale of my show involves lifting the watches of 4 volunteers I use to hold up my big unicycle and then enrolling them into a synchronized routine where they finally realize their watches are missing. (See this month's video of this routine.)
Years ago I had this bright idea for a new routine where I would lift a volunteers wallet without them knowing, get their name, address and birthdate from their ID, and pretend to psychically divine this information. The one and only time I actually tried this it worked, but I stopped after that. Here's why.
I was appearing at one of North America's premier resort areas performing outdoor shows in the village area to summer tourists. I had a very large crowd gathered by the end of this particular show and I was practically giddy that I had actually managed to lift one of my volunteers' wallets. I stood in front of him facing the audience and took out the wallet with my back to the man so that I could let the audience in on the joke while I gathered the information I needed from the man's ID to continue with the next phase of the bit.
I pulled the man's wallet out of my pocket and held it carefully shielded from his view in front of me. As I flipped it open the first thing that I and the rest of the crowd saw, glinting in the sunlight in its full authority and glory, was a shiny gold detective's badge. Yes, I had stolen the wallet of an undercover plain clothes cop.
What followed may have been one of the only times in history that a pick pocket has nervously and frantically used his skills of stealth and misdirection to replace stolen property in due haste, rather than make off with it. My audience had a blast, I was a nervous wreck, and unless somebody from that crowd who knew him ever let him in on it, the cop was none the wiser.
