What Kind of First Impression Will You Make?Much of my current corporate presentation was initially developed, tested and honed doing street performances many years ago at Granville Island public market in Vancouver, British Columbia. Granville Island is a popular spot to shop for both tourists and locals and many thousands of people come through every year, especially in the summer months. In 1984 I was performing there on Canada Day and had gathered a crowd of about 600 people in the market courtyard. As I interacted with the crowd I kept noticing one particular gentleman who was laughing and smiling broadly at the comedy, but no matter how much fun he seemed to be having I kept getting a creepy feeling about him. The man was handsome, pleasant looking and having a great time, but I couldn't shake a feeling of unease about him. This lasted for most of the show until near the end I looked up at him one more time and realized that it was Rutger Hauer who had played the chilling part of a genetically engineered humanoid in the movie classic, "Bladerunner". I had seen the movie more than a year ago at that point, but my initial impression of him was so haunting that despite the elapsed time and the fact that he was obviously not that character in reality, I still had an unconsciously negative reaction. As they say ... you have one chance to make a first impression. An impression of fun, laughter and enjoyment is hard to beat - so don't skimp on the fun. Make sure your entertainment is enjoyable and accessible to everybody and that it gets people involved. First impressions matter.
